The UK Energy Challenge and Opportunity

Transforming the UK energy system to be clean, secure and affordable, requires innovation across the Whole System from generation, transmission and distribution, to supply and consumption.

Whole System transformation will require:

  • A detailed understanding of the constituent parts of the energy system and the new technologies that can be deployed;
  • Increased interaction and energy system integration between the different constituent parts of the system;
  • New services and value streams using multiple energy-vectors (electricity, heat, gas, hydrogen, etc);
  • The market and policy frameworks to enable the low carbon transition.

The challenge is understanding how technology, market and policy solutions might contribute to the delivery of a clean, secure and affordable energy system, and what actions need to be taken to drive new innovations through to commercial reality.

Our Capabilities

The Infrastructure and Engineering team offers capability in the following  areas:

  • Bioenergy – building an evidence base to assess the sustainability of land use change to biomass production in the UK, including modelling tools to identify optimal bioenergy value chains, low carbon energy technologies that deliver carbon savings, and maximising the combination with Carbon Capture and Storage.
  • CCS, Industry and Hydrogen – building evidence and knowledge of the infrastructure requirements and opportunities available for CCS and hydrogen application in the UK, to create confidence in decision-making among policymakers, industry and investors. Assessing innovation investment to reduce the cost of capture, decarbonise industry and reduce the risks of storage.
  • Networks and Energy Storage – assessing networks and energy storage within the context of whole energy systems, including: assessing impact of new technologies, developing and adapting infrastructure network strategies to enable cost effective energy delivery and examining the detailed interactions between energy storage and other means of providing energy system flexibility.
  • Nuclear – assessing the potential of nuclear, contemporary designs and new technologies. Coupled with unique modelling on infrastructure costs, the interaction of nuclear with heat needs and flexible power generation to complement intermittent renewables. Identification of schedule and risk containment strategies to deliver cost reduction and financeable projects.
  • Renewables – offering expertise in solar, wind and marine generation, including: technology, systems and supporting infrastructure. Informing decision making, industry confidence to target investments to accelerate technology adoption, and grid-scale impacts.
  • Transport¬†– offering modelling, analysis and insight into the role of transport in future energy networks, optimising vehicle propulsion systems, consumer perspectives, market and policy frameworks, the physical value chains required to deliver the energy, and the role of new generation technologies in transport decarbonisation.
